Double papyrus palms
« Art Nouveau L’Égyptienne » (The Egyptian)
This stained glass window has a repetitive geometric design inspired by a papyrus leaf motif, decorated with a medallion painted in grisaille, which takes up the papyrus palmette motif in an Art Nouveau style and gives it a more refined aesthetic value.
This type of glazing, known as 'Egyptian', is inspired by the moucharabieh, which forms a dense mesh that can be used to cover transoms, windows, staircases, loggias and balconies to partially block out light while allowing soft, diffused light to enter the interior.
The structure of lead network is in itself an attractive graphic element that doesn't have to be the focus of much attention.
