But once it loses its purity, it can create a feeling of infinite emptiness.

Symbolically, black and white have always been associated with opposing energies. In our universe, they both confront and complement each other.

It is the colour of purity and therefore of virginity (the bride is dressed in white) and innocence (the baptised child is dressed in white). The novice nuns are dressed in white, as is the Pope.

White is the colour of peace. As far back as the 14th century, a white flag was waved to signal an end to hostilities.

However, the colour white does not always have a positive connotation. It is also associated with the freezing cold, with the image of icy desert peaks where life is impossible. In the folk legends there are monsters and ghosts dressed in white. Turning white can also mean sickness or even death.

In everyday language, white is also associated with absence or lack. We speak of a blank page without text, a blank voice without timbre, a blank night without sleep, a blank bullet without powder and a blank cheque without amount.

In Catholic religious imagery: White is the colour of the moon. It is a reflection of the Absolute. It is the triumph of the chosen ones.

In the Apocalypse: “He who overcomes will be clothed in white”.

The pope wears a white dress, as do the first communicant and the bride. White signifies virginity, purity, justice and its triumph, but also the cold, with snow covering everything and creating an atmosphere of desert and infertility.

In Chinese tradition, the symbol of yin and yang represented the duality of black and white.

In Korea, China and other Asian countries, it is associated with death and mourning. It is worn at funerals – mourners wear white. Simply because the deceased is transformed into a body of light, a glorious body that rises towards innocence and immaculacy.

In Chinese theatre, colour symbolism is used extensively for the audience’s identification of either the roles or the characters of the actors.

In character, white will reveal duplicity, perversity and treachery.

In India, white symbolises unhappiness, Misfortune

In Latin America in Mexico: White has the same associations as in North America and is therefore associated with purity and peace.

In the Middle East: The colour white is associated with purity and mourning. In Iran, however, this definition is extended to include the notion of holiness and peace.

In Egypt, a person dressed in white is a person of high social status.
