Les Nabis : un terme qui traduit une quête spirituelle et de renouveau esthétique
Au cours des deux dernières décennies du XIXe siècle, les Nabis ont constitué un groupe uni à la fois par des relations d’amitiés fortes et par une recherche artistique commune et novatrice, mettant la question du décoratif au cœur de leurs préoccupations.
les Nabis sont d’abord de jeunes peintres symbolistes passionnés d’ésotérisme et de spiritualité.
Un premier noyau du groupe se forme dès la fin des années 1880 autour de Paul Sérusier, Paul-Elie Ranson, Pierre Bonnard, Edouard Vuillard, Maurice Denis, alors élèves à l’Académie Julian.
Diffuser les arts en investissant les intérieurs
Le projet des Nabis était de proposer un décor moderne, qui corresponde à la vie que menaient leurs contemporains, à une époque où la Révolution industrielle modifiait profondément les cadres de vie. Il s’agissait aussi de sortir de l’esthétique du pastiche historique qui prévalait alors en matière d’art décoratif. La recherche des Nabis se développe en effet dans un contexte artistique très riche, notamment en ce qui concerne les arts décoratifs.
Cette dynamique de renouvellement des arts décoratifs, qui avait débuté en Angleterre dans les années 1860 avec le mouvement Arts and Crafts, allait déboucher au tournant du siècle sur l’Art Nouveau.
Décorateurs avant tout
Les Nabis cherchent à faire tomber la frontière et la hiérarchie qui pouvaient exister entre les arts décoratifs, rapprochés de l’artisanat, et les Beaux-Arts, considérés comme plus élevés. En cela, ils s’inscrivent dans un courant qui traverse l’Europe à la fin du XIXe siècle et qui défend la conception d’un art total.
Il s’agissait de faire travailler plusieurs disciplines artistiques différentes autour d’un projet commun. L’alliance de ces différents arts et techniques permettait la création d’une œuvre unique, embrassant toutes les dimensions de l’expérience artistique. Par le biais de commandes ou de leur propre impulsion, les Nabis se sont ainsi intéressés à des techniques aussi différentes que la tapisserie, le vitrail, la réalisation d’abat-jours ou de vaisselle

It’s not that I don’t have anything to write about, it’s that I have too much to write about, which I will confess is worse than having too little.
I have been out of the office for almost two weeks – which rarely-to-never happens. I attended the American Institute of Architects National Convention in New York for a week and then immediately after I rolled into a week-long vacation in Maine. I’ve never been to Maine before and since it was geographically convenient, it seemed like the right time to go. Also, it has been hot as Hades in Dallas lately and I wanted needed a break from the heat.
